Sydenham (?)
Dear Sir.
I very much regret that an in =
= disposition which though slight is not such
as will permitt me to make a journey to
town must prevent me from what would
be no small pleasure the forming of your
more intimate acquaintance by a friendly
meeting today —
I console myself however in my
absence from your agreeable party with the
idea that I was invited to it — I also feel
unfeigned pleasure at the prospect of seeing
you at any future time without the
reserve of unacquainted people — I am not a
little flattered at your expression of so much
good disposition in my behalf —
For our better acquaintance I shall think
much less ceremony than even that of
a batchelor's dinner necessary — I
shall approach you with an agreeable
consciousness of being the friend of our common
friend Ballyntine & such is my opinion
of that excellent man that I assure
you it would seem to be flattering you were
I to say all that I think of that [¿] who
seems to have so much of his esteem as you
possess —
I should bid you to see me at Sydenham if
it were not Winter — but in Summer I hope
you will not unfrequently see Sir
yours with great respect
Thos. Campbell
