1865
My Dear Mr Murray
I beg to trouble
you with a note for
Lady Frere — She
requested me to write
and Sir Bartle has
been so very kind in
inviting me to stay
with him and in
forwarding my
plans as much as
lay in his power
that I feel very
grateful — I should
like to give Lady Frere
a copy of the book —
Mr Maine and I got
on so well that he
promised me a copy
of his work — and I
cannot do less than
give him the same
token of good will —
If you would add
one for Revd Dr
Wilson — Malabar Hill
Bombay I shall feel
much obliged —
I am to have eight
Africans from an
93
educational establish
ment where carpentery
& smith work are taught
They may help me in
the navigation if I
get so far as to need it.
Also some of the
Marine battallion —
good well drilled
Indians who have
already roughed it
in the Persian Gulph
— and elsewhere —
And I propose to take
some buffaloes
as an experiment
on the poison of the
Tsetse — They are very
like the wild in every
way save in the shape of
their horns and amount
of hair but I have seen
here horns curved exactly
like those of the wild one
which lives among the
Tsetse — If we can
introduce a beast of
burden that defies the
insect pest it will be
a boon — I hope to be
ready in Novr I am to
give two lectures one
at Poonah & one at
Bombay — With love
to Mrs Murray and
the children & Cooke
I am &c
David Livingstone
