Dear Campbell
I received yoru letter dated 9th
in which you told me that you was
just going down to Mr Chauvets so I suppose
by the time you get this, you will be
safely landed there, & I hope you will
find it as agreable, as you did McFarlans
last year. I am surprised that in your
last letter you do no mention if you
had an agreable journey up, or how
you liked your Companion; I suppos
(at least from the description I got of him)
you & he would not be cold in the Chaise
together. I fancy you would know before
you left this that Lord Dalhousie
meant to take a journey, for his health
he set out last week for Buxton, &
Lady Dalhousie has had very good accounts
of him since. The only Scotch
news I have to tell you is, that Profeſsor
Ferguson has resigned the Moral philosophy
claſs, & that Dugald Steurt has accepted
it & that Playfair is to be
Profeſsor of Mathematics. I need not
pretend to give you any other news as
you are quite in the Political world.
Every person here is alarmed with the tax
upon Maid servants, as also that Bill
for changing the number of the judges
in the Court of Seſsion, because it
breaks the Articles of the Union which
I do not pretend to understand, but
there is a letter in the Newspapers here
from James Boswell who is in London
telling us that he will let us know
from time to time what you are to do
concerning that matter. I think [¿]
better be quiet. I saw Dundas [¿]
he is continuing to do very well.
I wish you may be able to read a word
of this for there is not a pen here that
will write & it is just upon Nine which
is the hour the post goes away so I am rather
hurried like you.
I am Dear Campbell
yours sincerely
James Wanchope
P.S have you been in the House
of Commons since you [¿]
