Brisbane, on the subject of the situation you have so handsomely put into my power to accept. He completely acquiesces with me in opinion, that it was a very great compliment confered on me a Stranger in the Country, when you offered me the appointment. _ A Clerkship in Major Gentlemen's Office has been tendered to me, and you must excuse me when I accept it: not that it is more respectable than the one in your own Office, but it is a more lucrative one. The general and I may say the principal object that young men have in view, when they quit their native home, and go to a distant Country, is, to make (if possible) a little money. This is likewise my aim, and the only reason I have in declining to accept the situation in your office. Before concluding, I beg leave to express how gratified I felt when Major [Gent] spoke to me on the subject; and I assure you that I will always and with feelings of gratitude bear in mind the very handsome offer you have made me. - I am respectfully Dear Sir Your Mo. Ob. Servt. Rob. Crawford
