a toupee of trees
balances on the hill’s crown;
prevailing wind lacquers hawthorn fringe
to an unnatural angle.
Fields have been brylcreemed by recent rain,
then flecked with dandruff sheep
that plait them with their tracks.
Dykes comb back waves of green
to let road’s grey scalp show through;
coarse grass tangles in deadlocks
at the verges.
