in a treasure-trove of lights
guarded by the Nevis dragon.
The Ben hunches down,
tail of path swishing through the dusk,
back and forth,
in age-old patience.
From glens’ nostrils come puffs of cloud;
lichen scales and sharp teeth of scree
gleam in moonlight;
one baleful eye blinks as a map is checked.
Summer solstice casts its spell,
even industry now a fairy castle,
its blazing ramparts reflecting in Loch Eil’s moat.
