Noo, Eppie, ye've lat doon yer freens.
Ye've lat me doon tee, an we wis lik breethers.

Is this the wye the warl works noo – nae trust
or nithin? Is this fit ye think the pooers abeen
tik a reed-rosy shine til?

It seems that wye. A'm left t' fend for masel.
Fit can fowk dee? Faa's left t' rely on?

A wis taen richt in, coortit, cossetit.
Noo aa yer courtesies, aa yer fine wirdies
are nithin bit vapour, a parcel o ween
an you a vanishin vapour tee.

Ach, awa – though ye dinna mine, the Gods'll nae
forget: ye'll git a recknin yet fae Faith hersel.
