Hodgson very gracious to 1st Scouters. Party a huge success. And the meal was 1st class. 11 FRIDAY Re-union Bev. Hall. Pop Byrne talks at great length. Boring, but good for a paper report. The youngsters enjoy the dancing! 12 SATURDAY Get word to stand by for visit to Hungarian Refugees at Cowdenb. Mr & Mrs S. take me up and act as interpreters. I am overwhelmed with stories. This is a real-life tragedy. My story must not mention Names. It is too dangerous. A problem here and an opportunity for practical Christians to do a Good Job. 13 SUNDAY To 12. Quite a tragedy for a young man, but he & the family are cheerfully playing cards. 16 WEDNESDAY Mary takes a touch of tummy upset. Dad taking to bed early (8pm) makes evenings quiet & dull for Cath and I. 17 THURSDAY Quiet evening & learning typewriter. Feel this is a must if I am going to do anything big in this writing game. 18 FRIDAY 21 Present at our first meeting of New Year. Hope this continues. T. VJ. starts 1st aid talks. 19 SATURDAY Odd jobs morning. To Raith (0) V Partick (3) in afternoon of wind and rain. To Jo for a visit. Jim & I agree this is Raiths worst yet. 20 SUNDAY To 10 & Comm. No stories to write but gratified that all my stuff has a good press - especially Refugee story. 21 MONDAY Interview SM. re Scouting in [?]press[/?] in Germany. 26 SATURDAY Working. 30 WEDNESDAY Good turnout at test meeting. 31 THURSDAY Stan in Ed. Infirmary FEBRUARY 1 FRIDAY 27 present. Very rushed. Home to get out for 9. Mass. 2 SATURDAY To Bowhill for Cath. Scout Rally over 100 Scouts present. Ex Dis. treasurer contact D.C. re. appreciation in F.F.P. Pass to A.D.C. 6 WEDNESDAY A.D.C. contacted. Tries to get Belford. Chalmers & Cath get necc. information. Belford down in evening. More tests passed tonight. 7 THURSDAY Have bad cold. To bed early. Rain all day. 16 SATURDAY Working 22 FRIDAY 26 present. B.P.'s Birthday Centenary. Troop in fine fettle. 23 SATURDAY Begin to re-felt hut roof. Get leaky part done but rain & wind force me to give up. 24 SUNDAY Scouts Cubs & Guides put on best show yet at St. M's in morning (Mass) & evening for B.P. celebrations. 27 WEDNESDAY Hard work doing Public Sec as well as my own reports. Scouts still turning up on Wednesday. MARCH 1 FRIDAY A rush as usual on 1st Friday. We have G.O.H. 2 SATURDAY A beautiful day and I set too & get the hut finished. Job looks all right I am sure after but it is worth it. How I enjoy working in my own back-yard! 3 SUNDAY Group Committee. We find that Camp money has not been put in Bank. Scouters Guild meeting in afternoon. Fr. Hamilton speaks & we enjoy his stuff. 23 SATURDAY Scouters meet St Andrews Church Hall Lochgelly. R.R. (2) V Falkirk (2) at Tynecastle. A poor game. 27 WEDNESDAY Last day for advert for jumble sale on April 5th. APRIL 7 SUNDAY Reform. Lecture. Hayfield com. centre. MAY 5 SUNDAY Polish Concert at P. Halls. I get an interpreter who is quite helpful. 6 MONDAY To see Ian McClure - ill with Rheumatics. A fine old chinwag. 7 TUESDAY To Carfin. A fine morning but weather turns cold & wet afternoon. 11 SATURDAY Scouters meet. A dull meeting. Only bright spot is when Alec Donaldson's patent fireplace collapses during demonstration! 12 SUNDAY St Margarets Guild at Kelty. Bill Collins & I have an argument but all ends wells. 19 SUNDAY Ambulance Camp and we come in 4th in Juniors (& last!) and 6th & 8th in Seniors (12 in Camp). 25 SATURDAY To Greenlaw in Jim's car with Phem & Ian. We have a grand day. Weather fine camp-site OK. Tea in Duns, a fine place. Only regret is that Cath & bairns are not with us to enjoy the run. 26 SUNDAY Frustrating day. To 12 Mass. - then I.F. calls & stays till afternoon is nearly over. Tea. Then to Rabbit's green. Family travel home alone while I clear up camp for Patrol. 27 MONDAY These Scouts! Time I had some help and devote more time to wife & family. JUNE 2 SUNDAY Mike Wallace & Frank Reilly off in map journey. Get chased at Balgonie Castle! 8 SATURDAY In garden most of this beautiful day. The St. M's then quiet walk with Cath Catherine & Caroline. 9 SUNDAY To Raith-Rover Camp. 6 Seniors pass Axemanship. But Frank & Mike break out of Fordell troop. Am disgusted. 10 MONDAY A rare day at house gardening & repairing washing m/c. Finish it to Cath's satisfaction. 11 TUESDAY The lovely weather holds. Tiring but good. 12 WEDNESDAY Beautiful day. 15 SATURDAY To Fordell for National Patrol Pilgrimage Camp. Find things haywire but Glasgow Scouters tops. Hefty job collecting money but good story here. 16 SUNDAY A hard but enjoyable day. Mass at Fordell. Into Duns. Meet Pilgrims on Story. Back to Troop. Easy afternoon but tiring evening. We find our Marquee rotted in store. To Camp slightly worried but forget in work. Cold. 22 SATURDAY Wake early. Coll Donaldson & I get on fine though he assumes command. A Grand day alltogether & the boys do well. Visitors enjoy camp 1st prominent. Personal Triumph at Campfire. 23 SUNDAY Catherine makes her first Communion. A Happy Day. Procession in afternoon. Too bad on some of the reluctant P.L.'s. 28 FRIDAY Mike Wallace passes his 1st class quest test. First in Troop and in Fife. 29 SATURDAY Cub Rally in Sports. A grand day. We go to the circus and it is hot. 30 SUNDAY To 10 Mass & Comm. with Catherine Mary & Caroline. Cath off to U.C.M. drive. We make for Kingswood Burntisland for warm bathe. Get caught on return in downpour. JULY 13 SATURDAY We arrive at Marchmont just before rain & get tents up. Cath & kids arrive in the rain. I kick myself for not being there to meet them. 14 SUNDAY This day could have been called wasted, except that we sacrificed all to get to Mass the most important thing. 15 MONDAY A real pioneering job done on path & bridge over burn & down. We are repaid for our service yesterday. 16 TUESDAY The fun continues with athletics & adventure journeys. Cath & I out on bikes. 17 WEDNESDAY Not such a good day. 82nd spoil our visitors day & steal the thunder. No more joint camps. 18 THURSDAY We have a rare day at Melrose & Gala. I have an adventure with watch in baths. 19 FRIDAY A mixed day. Plenty of test passing. A 2nd class. Down camp or most of it. 20 SATURDAY We pack up slowly & again beat rain. 82nd & ourselves at loggerheads again in run. A good camp but no more two Troop camping. 22 MONDAY Dig out tents today. Fine thank goodness. Boys along to help. 26 FRIDAY No Scouts. 27 SUNDAY Busy forenoon. Out afternoon. To Caths Mum & Dad. 28 SUNDAY To 12 Mass & Ma Heps afternoon. Still no buses. 29 MONDAY & work at Rosyth. This early rising is a killer. 30 TUESDAY Better today. Lawn cut by evening. 31 WEDNESDAY To Lathalmond. Weather wet. AUGUST 1 THURSDAY Painting woodwork (outdoor). Busy evening. 2 FRIDAY Hurt my toe. Right foot. Drop weight on it at work. Bruised a little & painful. 3 SATURDAY Painting woodwork on Dormer windows. Trimming lawn root out weeds. Toe ok. today. 4 SUNDAY To West Wemyss by bus. Thence on foot to E. Wemyss then to Caves & McDuff Castle. The youngsters love it. Cath has sore ankle but says nothing till after! 5 MONDAY To Kinghorn. Nice trip but fresh wind a little cold for bathing. 7 WEDNESDAY To Carfin. A fine day - but long. 25 SUNDAY Catholic Scouters Guild Meet. Rosyth = Cancelled. To Lochgelly for Story. 26 MONDAY Plastering in evening 27 TUESDAY Dashing round on Forsyth trophy business. 28 WEDNESDAY Same again. 31 SATURDAY What a turn-out for the Forsyth Trophy. We have 3 cars but the field is so far away that it is impossible to get near the place. We land them eventually then my car runs out of petrol coming home and I miss the Rangers match. SEPTEMBER 1 SUNDAY 5th wins trophy again. We are 4th or 5th from 7 teams. Still better luck next time. 6 FRIDAY We really get going tonight and have a good meeting. 20 present. Another 1st class Quest! 7 SATURDAY Working today. Not much time for anything else. 8 SUNDAY To 12 Mass with Caroline then to Ma Heps in afternoon. 11 WEDNESDAY Group Council.
