Glasgow, 1984

Dear Joan,

Just wondering how you are getting along. The days fly past so quickly and
here we are on the verge of another Christmas. It will be rather a sad
season for you.

Alice had not been so well and I had to get the doctor who after many blood
tests decided it was low-blood pressure. A very miserable condition and she
had to rest for a few weeks. She is much improved now. The tablets
prescribed seem to be helping. This year 1984 has not been to kind to us
with one thing and another. Many friends have died and such a lot of
depressing news going about. This coal strike has been dreadful. Where is
it all going to end.

We see Rita Gardner at the Whist Club. She was telling us her brother has
taken a stroke and had to be moved to hospital. She has looked after her 2
brothers for years now. I think you knew this brother George. His family
would have nothing to do with him so Rita took him in.

Jessie Ross is not long back from America where she was at her grand-son's
wedding. She had a marvellous holiday. Alas! Alice and I are out of it? No
children or grand-children to carry on our name? I enjoy hearing all about
your kinsmen, it refreshes my memory. You did not mention your brother
Jimmy. How is he getting on, many a laugh he gave us. I do hope we manage
to see one another soon. Tell Chrissie we were asking for her and that you
are both well.
