SCOTS Project - www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk Document : 666 Title : Dipper: 54 - Fishers! Author(s): Dr James A Begg Copyright holder(s): Dr James A Begg Text The other side of the angling coin! J.A.B. Envisage the idyllic scene, Enshrined in print and book, As leafy glades it flows between - The rippling, rustling brook. His happy wand the angler plies O'er streamy runs and wimples, And casts his gaily-coloured flies O'er each trout's rising dimples. His brother angler 'cross the stream, He cheerfully regales, And 'neath the shady bough he'll dream Of fish as big as whales. At peace with self, and fellow man, With Earth, and Universe, Tranquillity beyond our ken, Tranquillity - ma erse! Alane, himsel, or whiles in pairs, Oor fishers maun be couthie, But gethert three, or fower or mair's An invite for a stushie! They'll argie wha's furst doun the puils By fishin etiquette; Daur yin tak fish, the ither fuils Are shuir tae tak the pet! On Competition days there's aye A protest or a ruction, As 'brither anglers' tak the wey Tae freenship's self-destruction. In measly minds ill-naitur dwells, O that I hae nae dout, They'd as shuin cast oot amang themsels, As cast a flee for troot! Committee meetins aye bring oot The warst ill-gabbit crack; The guttin knife that's meant for troot 'S mair like tae stab yer back! As fiction triumphs ower fact, An lees tak ower their lives, Some less an less like fishers act, An mair like auld fishwives! Juist tell me this, I hae tae ken, Gif it be true or not; Are curlin, boolin, gowfin men Aa taintit wi this rot? Or is it as I badly fear, That fishers are unique? If that's the case, I'll sadly sweir There's times they mak me seik! ___ stushie/squabble tak the pet/take the huff This work is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
