Wi sang as clear as ony flute In scale o C. I staun ahint a tree an luik, An watch him sing an bob an jouk, Syne gie his snaw-white breist a pouk, His feathers turn, Afore he taks anither douk In th' icy burn. Unkent, unseen, as yin we baith For endless meenits haud oor braith, Me, fearfu lest he's swept tae daith Aneath the floes, He, tentless o my lack o faith, As in he goes. An gin I fear he'll shuirly dee Oot he'll lowp sae jauntily, Syne doun across the burn he'll flee Frae stane tae stane, An sing an bob an jouk a-wee Then in again. He jinks aboot the watter-side, Then deep aneath the current he'll slide, Doun whaur the caddis-beasties bide, An gadgers tae, Frae's pokin neb nae nymphs can hide Nor soum away. Wee burnside freen, I maun salute Yer quest tae gether larval fruit, As weel as ony speckled troot, I daur maintain, Next time ye dive, I'll hae nae dout Ye'll rise again.
