Twa thousan feet up Blackcraig Hill A wee broun beast lay stiff an still, Held in a snaw-wraith's icy chill By winter's grip, A tuim matchbox it widnae fill Frae tail tae tip. Nae mammoth this frae ages past, In glacier ice a statue cast, Nae shaggy fleece tae face the blast Like black-face ewe, It lay juist whaur it souchd its last - A pigmy shrew. I mused as ower its corp I kneeled, 'Wee thing, whit garrd ye lae the bield An rin across this snawy field I'll niver ken, Tae dee but a yaird frae th' rocky shield That wis yer den. 'Ne'er grippit ticht in whitreck's jaw, Or short-eared houlet's needle claw, Frae doun the ermine's muckle maw Ye joukt unskaith', Till smoord by wraiths o Januar snaw, Ye met yer daith.'
